Aviously

Because, aviously…

Tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001, Mayoral Primaries New York City.

As a 7th grader, I was already voting, going with my Dad yearly into the booth, and pulling the levers as instructed to, at 6:30AM before heading off to school and work.

And then, sitting in class at around 9:30, I heard the news from a friend who had a radio in his pocket, and had been listening to it in his sleeve at his desk (come on, we all remember those days, with one earbud up your sleeve, listening to sports talk radio), that something had hit the twin towers.

Not one of them, but both of them.

Of course, none of us believed him, until one student went out to the hallway, and through the North-West facing windows, saw smoke coming from that direction.

I can’t remember the time that the school told us, but I do remember bits and pieces of the school day.

Standing there on the third floor, at the windows overlooking the yard, which suddenly had a clear view of New York City that we had never noticed before.

Up there with another student whose mother worked in the twin towers, wondering if she had gotten out (she did), and hearing of a student in a parallel class who left to go home, because they hadn’t heard from his father, who unfortunately didn’t make it out.

We did have secular studies that day, and our social studies teacher told us what he had heard about the day. We learned everything, from the news of 4 separate attacks, to first hearing about Osama bin Laden, the man we would later get confirmed to us was the leader of the terrorist group that had attacked us.

Getting out of school that day around an hour early, with no school buses, everyone trying to find whomever was picking them up.

It was raining when we got out. But not liquid, instead little papers fluttering through the air. Burnt pieces of….paper…building…ash. The ash that would coat the entire Metro New York City area for days after.

I got home, and found my Dad there, tired after a long, long day. A day he could never forget.

He had a store, a mere three blocks from the World Trade Center site.

At around 9AM my Mother had called him, to ask if he heard fire trucks. He hadn’t, until then.

A short time later, a family friend showed up at his store, and together they put sand bags blocking the door, keeping the air inside the store clean, relying on a water-based air conditioner to bring in fresh air.

He won’t talk much about the day, but he did see people all staring up at the buildings outside, and slowly, in horror, turn and run, as a giant smoke cloud moved down the street after them, rolling past his windows and door, covering everything in a ghostly grey.

He left the store a few hours later, walking across downtown Manhattan, and found one of the last subway cars out to Brooklyn, even if it was to the wrong neighborhood, and somehow found his way home.

Fast forward 10 years. 9-11-11. The opening of the 9/11 memorial.

The next day, September 12th, I was there. 10 years older, trying to remember all I knew, and seeing the two ginormous holes in the ground, with the names etched around them, of all the victims of the day, from the Towers. From the Pentagon. From Shanksville, Pennsylvania. As well as the 6 from the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The memorial was done correctly.

For those that haven’t been there, it’s literally, two holes in the ground, in the footprints where the two buildings stood. Here is a picture from last year, 9-11-13, of the site.

9-11 memorial

Around these holes are the etchings of the names of the victims. And in the footprints of the buildings is just a flow of water, falling into a hole in the center, an emptiness.

I’ve been back there a few times, just taking in the serenity of the site, in the midst of a bustling city. Hearing the rush of the water, sitting beneath one of the hundreds of trees planted there.

Seeing the “survivor tree”, the one that was found under rubble, still alive, with just one branch. Replanted elsewhere, and uprooted again by storm. Replanted over and over, now in its final space at the 9-11 Memorial, for a symbol of hope amongst chaos.

I bought that day a wrist band, one that didn’t leave my wrist for over two years, that simply said “9/11 Memorial” – “United By Hope”.

One of my memories from the World Trade Center, was as a kid, going up to the top, and seeing a stream of cars go into a building, and not come out the other side. But it was a two way street, and just as many cars were going the opposite direction, with no apparent way of getting there either. It turned out to be the entrance to the (then named) Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

I have yet to be to the top of the other tall buildings in New York City (such as the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center), but one day I plan to go up the new freedom tower and view our great city from 100 stories up again.

I will never forget that day, and I hope that no one else does either.

Everyone has different reactions when they are down.

When I am down I spend money. I buy things.

Usually it is simple things, like lottery tickets (particularly scratch-offs) or electronics.

Anyone ever heard of the Motorola Skip? I own one 🙂 It’s actually pretty cool, but was completely unused…{for those wondering, it is an electronic sign-in device so that you don’t need a pin on your phone…simply a tap of the Skip}.

But I was curious what other people do when they are down? What are your fall backs?

As I typed this…I realized that no one reads these, so chances are I’ll never hear any responses…but it was worth a try 🙂

A few months ago video came out of football player Ray Rice dragging his unconscious (then) fiance. Janay, from a casino elevator, after apparently beating her.

Because of this video, the NFL suspended Rice for a few games…that is until now when the video from inside the elevator came out, showing Rice actually hitting his now wife, and the league backtracked, suspending him indefinitely and being released from his team.

But wait, if you read that and got confused, don’t be. He beat his fiance. It became a public circus. And then they got married.

And now that the actual video has come out, everyone is going crazy…except Janay, although she may be crazy in other ways…I give you Exhibit A, a statement via her Instagram account that was published this morning:

Ray Rice InstagramShe wants everyone to leave it alone.

Let him keep his job after beating her up…if she was able to forgive him and marry him, then shouldn’t you “Ravensnation”?

<Please catch my sarcasm there>

Can I say that chances are he’ll never be part of Ravensnation again? Even if he returns to the league, chances are he’ll end up on a Jail team; such as the Cowboys, Jets or Bengals.

The people that should be under fire here is the Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, as well as the DA in New Jersey, and anyone else that saw the video and didn’t put it out before now…or should’ve seen the video by now and claimed never to have seen it. How can the Commissioner not go to the casino and insist on seeing this video before now, I’ll never understand.

NASCARs playoffs kick off next weekend, with an all-new format, that is set to make things a lot more exciting down the stretch, with each weeks race meaning something to the racers in the Chase, and also leaving us with a final race this year that means more than just “Jimmie Johnson needs to finish 26th or better to win”.

Let’s break it down, and then mention who is in-it-to-win-it this year:

  • 16 drivers made it into the Chase this year (based on wins during the season, not necessarily on points…so drivers winning in the beginning of the year [I’m looking at you Dale Earnhardt Jr.] could relax throughout the rest of the season [although he didn’t])
  • As usual the playoffs are a 10-race event, with each race hosting the standard field of 43, however, the amount of drivers competing for the Cup will decrease as the playoffs go on
  • 16 racers start off in the playoffs for the first 3 races (Challenger Round), this is reduced to 12 for the next 3 races (Contender Round), 8 for races 7-9 (Eliminator Round) and finally just four racers with a chance to win it in the final race of the season (The NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship)
  • To advance from one round to the next, racers must either win a race in the current round or be in the top (12, 8 or 4) in points to advance. This gives racers that have car trouble in the first race of the Chase, a chance to win the 2nd race, and still be in the playoffs, not being eliminated on one performance
  • Four drivers will enter the last race of the season, and the first to the finish line from that group, wins the cup…I smell an old fashioned Green-White-Checkered exciting race to the finish!
  • Point for the playoffs are as follows:
    • Playoff drivers start with 2000 points (+3 for every regular season victory)
    • Racers in the 2nd round have their points moved to 3000
    • Racers in the 3rd round get moved up to 4000 points
    • And finally, the racers in the Championship race will start with 5000 points

The drivers who will be competing for the NASCAR Sprint Cup are (point totals in parenthesis, and drivers # listed as well):

  1. #2 Brad Keselowski (2012) – Brad is the 2012 Champion
  2. #24 Jeff Gordon (2009) – Jeff is a 4-time Champion, but hasn’t won since 2001
  3. #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2009) – Dale has never won the Championship, but his father won it 7-times
  4. #48 Jimmie Johnson (2009) – Jimmie is the reigning Champion and a 6-time winner
  5. #22 Joey Logano (2009)
  6. #4 Kevin Harvick (2006)
  7. #99 Carl Edwards (2006)
  8. #18 Kyle Busch (2003)
  9. #11 Denny Hamlin (2003)
  10. #10 Kurt Busch (2003)
  11. #5 Kasey Kahne (2003)
  12. #43 Aric Almirola (2003)
  13. #47 A.J. Allmendinger (2003)
  14. #20 Matt Kenseth (2000)
  15. #16 Greg Biffle (2000)
  16. #31 Ryan Newman (2000)

Every morning I try to get in some word/number games so that my brain can do a little work.

For this I go to USA Today’s website and run through all their games, from the end–>beginning.

The games there are fairly simple to grasp, and some are easier on a daily basis than others, but here is a list of the ones they offer:

  • Crossword – Your daily standard crossword puzzle HERE
  • Sudoku – The standard 9X9 numbers game that became a fad a few years ago HERE
  • Mini Sudoku – A good warmup for your Sudoku, as it’s a simple 6X6 board HERE
  • Word Roundup – Word find, with the words being answers to the clues given HERE
  • Quick Cross – Simple 4X4 crossword puzzle HERE
  • Up and Down Words – A snake style word game, where the last word of one answer, is the first word of the next HERE
  • Don’t Quote Me – Rearrange the words to create a quote from a famous person HERE

Tonight is the kickoff of the 2014 NFL season.

As usual, I have 0 expectations for the Dallas Cowboys, but in the NFC East, anything could happen, so there is always a glimmer of hope!

Nothing major has changed with the Cowboys but one positive addition that I like on the defensive side is Henry Melton. Melton didn’t play at all last year due to an injury, but look for him to be a solid anchor to that front line adding some pressure to the QB.

This year I am also invested more on other teams besides the Cowboys, involved in two fantasy football leagues, two pick-em leagues, and one survivor-suicide pool (in which hopefully I’ll last more than one week).

Blended was not on any lists of movies that I had wanted to watch, but after happening upon the DVD this past weekend, I gave it a try…and wasn’t disappointed.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have teamed up on a few movies in the past, including the awesome 50 First Dates, and this movie plays out just as you’d expect with the chemistry that these two have.

Blended is about two single parents going on an awful first date (to Hooters…at which Jim (Sandler) seemingly knows all the waitresses) and trying to get as far away from each other as possible. But after Jim runs into Lauren (Barrymore) on multiple occasions, both end up on an African getaway…sharing a room, and time with each others’ kids.

With a great supporting cast, including Kevin Nealon, Joel McHale and Terry Crews; the film is filled with lots shimmying (for the guys), lots of Crews’ pecs flexes (for the girls), and a lot of great laughs (for everyone).

I would put this on everyone’s short list for comedies, and give it a 8.5 out of 10.

I don’t even know myself at all
I thought I would be happy by now
The more I try to push it
I realize – gotta let go of controlGotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
So let it happen

It’s just a spark
But it’s enough to keep me going
And when it’s dark out, no one’s around
It keeps glowing

Every night I try my best to dream
Tomorrow makes it better
Then I wake up to the cold reality
And not a thing is changed

But it will happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen

It’s just a spark
But it’s enough to keep me going
And when it’s dark out, no one’s around
It keeps glowing

It’s just a spark
But it’s enough to keep me going
And when it’s dark out, no one’s around
It keeps glowing

And the salt in my wounds isn’t burning anymore than it used to
It’s not that I don’t feel the pain, it’s just I’m not afraid of hurting anymore
And the blood in these veins isn’t pumping any less than it ever has
And that’s the hope I have, the only thing I know that’s keeping me alive

Alive

Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen

Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen
Gotta let it happen

It’s just a spark
But it’s enough to keep me going
(So if I let go of control now, I can be strong)
And when it’s dark out, no one’s around
It keeps glowing

It’s just a spark
But it’s enough to keep me going
(So if I keep my eyes closed, with the blind hope)
And when it’s dark out, no one’s around
It keeps glowing

Every year, since 2007, iTunes has held a month long music festival that is free to watch Live via iTunes, Apple TV, or the app available on iOS, and can even be watched for a few days after they air live.

The Festival takes place throughout the month of September (originally in July) with multiple concerts a day.

This year, it will be held again in the Roundhouse, an abandoned railway turntable turned performance center located in London.

For the first time this year, they held a one-week Festival here in the United States, in Texas, during the timing of South by Southwest.

Previous years I’ve enjoyed watching concerts from Snow Patrol (2009), Ellie Goulding (2010, 2012, 2013), Linkin Park (2011), Coldplay (2011), P!nk (2012) and Katy Perry (2013), among others.

Last year also featured Justin Timberlake in the final week of the Festival debuting his new album a day before release.
