Aviously

Because, aviously…

There are almost no words to describe it, so I’m gonna borrow some from conversations I’ve had with others in the hours since we found out that Rebecca was no longer with us:

But for some reason – and granted I haven’t spoken to her since graduation – this hits pretty hard

She was so full of life and brilliant. I am in such shock

Hard to forget the curls

That all sounds right to me.

She was the most brilliant light in a room, from the minute she walked in. We all remember the days sitting in the cafeteria at Brooklyn College, and she’s as much a part of that picture as any of us.
Outgoing. Bubbly. Full of life and giving it to those around her.

And it hits all of us slightly differently, but the reason I think it: She is a lot of us.
Energetic, outgoing, and holding a lot inside.

There will be plenty of conversations on this in the upcoming days, but it needs to be said: The stigma is what keeps any of us from saying anything.

We want to go out every day like everything is peachy, and not face the reality. It’s just so much easier like that.

But so many of us suffer. So many of us just can’t admit (whether to ourselves or to those around us) that depression, loneliness, whatever you want to call it, is eating away at us.
Making us miserable on the inside, regardless how we appear on the outside.

And I don’t know what the real solution is, but I’m gonna try my hardest to figure it out.

Rest in Peace Rebecca. Your bright light will continue to shine and help the rest of us through tough times.

Blue Card 2016

Hooligans reign supreme in the soccer world.
Just the other day Russian hooligans, attending EURO 2016 in France, beat up some England fans.
The result? Fans being deported back to Russia. People jailed up to two years,  others banned from France for two years.

And somehow, people think this is what soccer needs in America to make it attractive?

Americans love their violence, as evidenced by the NFL, UFC, and MMA.

But what Americans love even more is competition. Give them good competition and they’ll eat it up.

It’s why 1980 Lake Placid was popular. It’s why the 1999 USMNT was a big deal. It was America coming out on top in a worldwide competition.
It’s why Lebron vs. Curry, Crosby vs. Ovechkin, Kershaw vs. Syndergaard, Manning vs. Brady are all insanely popular. Competition at its highest points.

But here in New York, groups like the Empire State Ultras and the B49s rear their ugly heads (example from this week).
They don’t speak for all supporters. In fact they are a small minority of us. But their actions stand out and make everyone look bad.
Fighting at every big event. Bottles cracked, punches thrown, blood flowing.
For what reason? Because they don’t support your team?

Grow up and stop giving the rest of us a bad name.

Some songs that I’ve been listening to:

Lost Boy – Ruth B

There was a time when I was alone
Nowhere to go and no place to call home
My only friend was the man in the moon
And even sometimes he would go away, too

Freeze You Out – Sia

I’m not running away
I will feel the pain and stay
I’m not running again
Even though I’m scared, baby
And I won’t freeze you out
Like I have been
I won’t freeze you out
I’m gonna let you in

Burning House – Cam

See you at a party and you look the same
I could take you back but people don’t ever change
Wish that we could go back in time
I’d be the one you thought you’d find

Just Like Fire – P!nk

Just like fire, burning up the way
If I can light the world up for just one day
Watch this madness, colorful charade
No one can be just like me any way

So Alive – Goo Goo Dolls

I am no man of steel
I have no heart of stone
Don’t tell me how it feels
I’ll find it on my own

I have a pair of Rockport Hydroshield Waterproof Dress Shoes, that I wear occasionally.

Unfortunately, they wore down on the bottom, after limited usage, and started taking in water when walking through puddles.

So I contacted Rockport, and they told me to send them in, and they’ll review them.

After mailing them in (and waiting 4-6 weeks) I received a package from Rockport, with a fresh pair of shoes.

Thank you Rockport!

Ad I guess it holds true. It can’t hurt to ask and see where it goes.

Here is my All-Time New York Rangers roster, based off their time played with the Rangers.
Yes, I lived through the ’94 Cup run (albeit young), so I may be slightly slanted…but only slightly.

Starting Lineup

G – Mike Richter – Richter gets the nod over Hank simply becuase of The Cup. Best known for his penalty shot save on Bure in Game 4.

D – Brian Leetch – Mark Messier called Leetch the “best all time”. Leetch was a 10X All-Star, 2X Norris Trophy winner (Top All-Around Defensive Player), and the first American to win the Conny Smyth Trophy (Playoffs MVP). All-Time Rangers leader in assists (741).

D – Ron Greschner – A career Ranger, at his retirement he held Rangers records in most Points, Goals and Assists.

LW – Adam Graves – Set a New York Rangers record (at the time) of 52 Goals in a season during the ’94 Cup run.

RW – Andy Bathgate – 8X All-Star, and had 729 points for his career.

C – Mark Messier – The Captain guaranteed non-elimination, and carried the team to their first Cup in 54 years.

Bench – In no particular order

Goaltender is the strongest Rangers position in history, and their bench has an over-abundance of them.

G – Henrik Lundqvist – Dubbed early on as The King, he has a Vezina Trophy (best Goalie in the League) and is the only goalie in NHL history with ten 30+ win seasons in first 11 seasons of a career.

G – Eddie Giacomin – Shared a Vezina trophy and a 6X All-Star.

G – John Vanbiesbrouck – The Beezer was a Vezina winner, and had 200 career wins.

RW – Rod Gilbert – A career Ranger, setting records in Games (406) and Points (1,021).

F – Frank Boucher – Won The Cup three times as a Ranger, twice as a player; once as the coach.

RW – Jaromir Jagr – Only played three years for a Ranger, but during that time he averaged 1.15 Points Per Game, and set the Rangers record of 54 goals in a season, and points (123).

RW – Bryan Hextall – Won The Cup with the Rangers in 1940, and won the scoring title in 1942.

RW – Mike Gartner

D – Harry Howell – All-Time Rangers leader in Games Played

Recently I donated four tickets to a NYCFC match to a charity auction.
The tickets were won by someone, and I got their contact info so that I could send them the tickets.

Two weeks before the event the tickets were sent to them.
A few days before the event I messaged the winners, reminding them to claim their tickets.

They never did claim their tickets, and they never did respond to my email reminders.

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t message me to say “thanks for the tickets, but we don’t have a need for them”.
I could have sold the tickets and made my money back.
I could have given the tickets away for free.

Would it have been so difficult to have sent a single response?
I just don’t understand people.

Tom Clancy Duty and Honor by Grant Blackwood is the latest installment of the Ryanverse, this time a Jack Ryan Jr. novel, and is coming out next Tuesday, June 14.

Jack Ryan Jr. is still on leave from Hendley Associates, and his time to decide on his future is coming close. Should he return to “analysis” or move on to something else?

But when he almost gets mugged on a seemingly regular trip to the supermarket, it sends him on a worldwide chase, without the help of The Campus, in search of why someone might want him dead.

This book as an 8 out of 10.

Now You See Me is a 2013 movie starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Woody Harrelson.
Its sequel (Now You See Me 2) comes out this Friday.

The movie does not fool or disappoint, nor does it trick you into thinking it’s a great movie.
It is a magically enjoyable action-heist in which the main characters, The Four Horsemen, steal from the rich and give to the deserving, as their story intrigues the world, leading to the FBI and Interpol trying to track them down.

Come in closer, because the more you think you see, the easier it’ll be to fool you.

I am surprised that I hadn’t seen it until now, and it gets a solid 7.5 out of 10.

Most people didn’t know the name Ariel Helwani before this weekend. Helwani is a writer for MMAFighting.com covering UFC among other sports.
He formerly worked for Fox Sports and their UFC coverage.

Saturday night, during UFCs latest installment, they showed a preview video for the upcoming events, and revealed that a former star, Brock Lesnar, would be coming out of retirement.

Two hours before the PPV (pay-per-view) event started, during which this big storyline reveal was planned, Helwani broke the story that Lesnar would be returning.
He was then escorted to Dana White’s office (the President of UFC) and informed that his credentials were being pulled, and he was being given a lifetime ban. The only way he’d be allowed to watch UFC was if he bought a ticket.

The UFCs claim was that Helwani stepped on their production, and even though he had acquired the information thru sources, and was never told “this is off the record” (or something similar), he shouldn’t’ve reported it without first confirming it with White’s office.
If he had gone to White’s office, they would’ve denied the return from retirement, as they had done on Friday when asked at a press conference.
But Helwani knew 100% that his information was correct, and there was no reason for him to not report the story.

The UFC has clearly shown that it is not a sport but a production, in the fact that they insist on controlling every aspect of a story.
Can you imagine if Adrian Wojnarowski was banned from reporting on the NBA, after reporting that Lebron was returning to Miami, hours before Lebron actually made the announcement?

It is unacceptable for a sport to manhandle the media like this, and as Helwani put it yesterday “my job is to report on the stories, I hate being the story”.

Last night the UFC finally rectified their mistake and reinstated Helwani, and said in a statement to SB Nation (the parent company of MMAFighting.com):

We respect the role the media plays in our sport and beyond, including MMAFighting’s ability to report news. However, in our opinion, we believe the recurring tactics used by its lead reporter extended beyond the purpose of journalism. We feel confident our position has now been adequately communicated to the SB Nation editorial team.

[…] We will continue to introduce this sport and its athletes to new fans across the world, and we will do so by working alongside media across all platform.

Dana White is an owner. Don’t think of him as David Stern or Gary Bettman, but rather he is a Steinbrenner or James Dolan. So he doesn’t need to let anyone in to watch UFC, and he can control the media that view his events.
But if you are going to stifle the press, then don’t be surprised when people stop watching and following your brand.
