Aviously

Because, aviously…

It’s been over a year and a 150+ songs later, but #SongOfTheDay has become a part of who I am.

It originally started as a private joke between me and a friend in late 2012, in which every email between us, we’d be sure to include a song lyric and a song in it, and we went through 288 songs in that few week exchange (yes, we counted).

At the same time, I’ve come to realize that it really started in January of 2011, when in the winter break, I spent 30 days sending a friend of mine 30 different songs, and we’d turn those into our song of the night.

April 15, 2013 I started my official #SongOfTheDay hashtag on Twitter and Facebook, with Foster the People’s, Pumped Up Kicks and haven’t really looked back.

Five days a week, until I hit 100 songs in early September at which point I took a break.

The break was needed simply because it is difficult to find a good song every day, without repeating artists.

But I am back at it now, for about a month already, and not worrying anymore about repeating artists or songs, but more about just putting out what I feel.

There have been arguments over some of the choices, when people don’t agree with songs I pick.

But quite frankly, that doesn’t matter, as they are purely my choice, and my freedom to pick whatever I feel. And I’ve always told those people to go make their own #SongOfTheDay’s…and I can say with certainty that only one person has actually done that (not because of disagreements with my songs, but more that they liked the idea and wanted to choose songs that they enjoyed).

As with most things in my life, it hasn’t bothered me when people rip into my songs, because I know that I do the #SongOfTheDay because I like to do it, regardless of who sees it.

If it bothered me how many people see or care about the things I do, I would’ve stopped Tweeting (Up to ~175 followers in almost four years) and definitely would’ve stopped blogging (average of 2 viewers per day, over a few different blogs…I am clearly not a draw, lol).

Anyways, while anyone actually reading this, probably already follows me on Twitter (@iAmAviG), you can look there for my daily #SongOfTheDay, or just use this link if you want the songs, and none of the other junk I tweet!

So last week, during my iPad adventures, I bought a new case for the iPad, and went to Saddleback Leather to purchase one.

They are a small company based out of the South that only sells items online, and not in any stores.

This made me a little skeptical, but after reading all their return policies and guarantees, I figured I’d give them a try.

When it arrived a few days later, I was very happy with the product, and any questions I had about it, they were quick to respond to via their customer service Twitter account (@SaddlebackHelp).

So it was no surprise to me when I found myself on their website again a mere four days later.

And with the help of Keenan and Tim (their wonderful customer service Twitter reps) I found the right wallet for me, and once again, eagerly awaited my order.

It came in the mail yesterday…and it is glorious.

So if you are looking for any leather products, be sure to go to SaddlebackLeather.com!

BTW, this was no way endorsed by them, nor did I receive anything in return for it…but when you are happy with a product, sometimes you just need to voice yourself!

So a new show launched last night on FOX called “Riot”.

Based off an Australian Television Series, and hosted by an Australian, Rove McManus, this show features a bunch of short improv games, with the sole purpose of getting the viewers to laugh.

As a giant fan of Whose Line Is It Anyways? I figured this show would be a similar laugh fest, especially since it was advertised with stars such as Steve Carell and Jason Alexander.

But unfortunately, week one was a dud.

While there were some funny moments, it seems too silly and like they are trying too hard to make us laugh, instead of just going with what feels right and letting the laughs come naturally.

The potential is high for this show, but the delivery is just plain flat.

I’ll come back for Episode 2, just to see if they can improve, but they are off to a bad start.

And it is definitely not a Riot.

Continuing the theme from yesterday, in which I continue to place Twitter on a pedestal over Facebook.

There are a lot of great uses for Twitter, that  Facebook doesn’t always offer you.

Facebook is slowly catching up with Hashtags and the Facebook Newswire, but when push comes to shove, Twitter is the place to go for breaking news and fast moving actions (such as the NHL trade deadline, which this year was an incredible day to be following along on Twitter).

It’s as simple as using the search bar on Twitter and putting in the topic at hand, and once you see a bunch of tweets all sharing a common hashtag, just click on that hashtag, and enjoy keeping up 🙂 Also, you can go straight to the Twitter searches, by going to search.twitter.com.

Another thing I use it for is updates on games and apps. Most developers and companies have a Twitter account, and are eager to keep their followers up to date on what they are doing.

One of the recent uses I had for it is when Sim City updated to allow the much waited for “Offline Mode”. With them keeping us up to date on it, and letting us know when it was released, it left the wondering out of it, which is always nice.

And lastly for today is Customer Service.

Customer service on Twitter is amazing, and almost instantaneous. Complain and mention a company, and they will be sure to respond.

On the flip side, compliment a company, and they’ll usually respond as well.

My recent experiences with Saddleback Leather (@SaddlebackHelp) have resulted in great customer service, and a very happy customer.

Yup, I think Twitter > Facebook.

Let’s start on a simple level.

On Facebook, you have everyone you know, have ever known, or ever met, all clogging up your newsfeed. Sure, I may be friends with you, but we have absolutely nothing in common, so why should I have to read every thought you have on your vegetarian meals or Game of Thrones addiction.

On Twitter, I follow tons of people, that I know absolutely nothing about, but share the same interests as me, and talk about things I actually care about.

Next.

On Facebook, because you have all these people you know, you expect them to care about things you say, as they are “Friends” (by Facebook standards). So when a random person comments on your status or post, the first question is “Who are you?” and “Why are you commenting on my thing”, regardless if what they are saying has to do with what is being discussed.

On the flip side is Twitter. If someone posts something on Twitter (such as a question or fact, among other things), anyone can respond to it, and it’s completely normal, as they are usually discussing the topic at hand.

Now as to why I think Twitter is healthier:

On Facebook, I try to talk to one of my friends on a post, and their other friends (who I may have nothing to do with) will rip into me. In such a case, you’d think that the friend would step in and say something…but 9 times out of 10, they just sit back and let things happen.

On Twitter, I have made connections with people from all over the country (No seriously. I have had conversations with people from Dallas to Seattle to the Carolinas.). All because we share interests and have things in common.

And that brings me to trolls.

Facebook is loaded with them. Hundreds of people waiting to pick on anything any random person says, and harp on it.

On Twitter, unless you are a celebrity, you generally won’t get trolled. Sure, you may get Spammed from bogus accounts, but once you weed those out, they are gone for good. (As in: My first few months on Twitter I got them a lot…after blocking them, in recent years I haven’t seen much of them.)

And lastly (for this post). Celebrities.

Where else can you rub elbows and have conversations and connections with people in the public scene, besides Twitter?

I have had conversations with actors and actresses about upcoming shows/movies/episodes (Hello @Heybrooklynlowe). Have made connections to sports stars, that have led to great little perks (Why thank you @StewartHaasRcng for the personalized Tony Stewart signed cap). And even had sports anchors glare into my soul (Thanks Julie Stewart-Binks (@JSB_FOX))!

Oh, and did I mention that my favorite sports teams have sent me birthday wishes over the years? (Thanks Dallas Cowboys and New York Rangers 🙂 )

So yes, I have been on and off of Facebook for almost 7 years (was in the first 70 million users…they are now up to 1.3 billion), joining it in 2007. While Twitter I didn’t join until exactly three years later.

But Twitter has quickly become my favorite Social Media child.

Oh well.

“Community” has officially been cancelled.

For a few seasons already it’s been on and off the ledge, but every year they got one step closer to their goal of six seasons and a movie.

Well, that ended today, as they were cancelled after their fifth season.

In reality, I am not terribly upset that it won’t be on anymore…but on the flip side, I always enjoyed watching it (minus a few episodes).

So until the next epic paintball war breaks out on some show…I’ll just have to settle for reruns.

UPDATE: They were picked up by Yahoo for another season

Once in a while I go biking around Brooklyn.

The hardest part is riding on the East/West Avenues, as their is no real space on those streets for cars + bikes.

As such, I’ve started to ride on the bike paths of Ocean Parkway. They have lots of room for bikes, on a designated bike path.

As such, you would think that other people would stay off these paths. But nope.

The best is when you have the jogger moms with their carriages, walking three wide on the path, chatting away. Oblivious to the bikes around them, trying to get by.

These are the same people, that if a biker was riding on the sidewalk of some other street, they would scream at them for riding dangerously.

If you want bikes to stay off the walking paths…then it is time for walkers to stay off the bike paths.

I know I am a few weeks late on listening to this album…but that doesn’t mean that now that I listened to it, I can’t give my review!

Quite frankly, Shakira is a great performer.  And this album is no exception. Over the years a lot of artists change to try and fit in, and Shakira has not become one of those.

Her album sounds the same like she always has, yet is fresh and new at the same time. And who can honestly say that they don’t enjoy Shakira’s voice?

So yeah, my review is kind of vague, but overall, I definitely think y’all should listen to her new album!

Have you heard about the kidnapped children in Nigeria?

When did you hear about it?

Did you know that it happened on April 15th…more than 3 weeks ago…

As blogger Xeni Jardin says“Maybe if the more than 200 Nigerian girls abducted from their school weeks ago were on a ferry in Korea, a jet liner in the Indian Ocean, in the owner’s box at a Clippers basketball game, or were white, the world would pay more attention.”

How have we missed this.

How have we let this all pass.

Finally on Tuesday the United States got involved.

Talking to CBS News, President Obama said: “(We are) sending in a team of our military, law enforcement and other experts and we’re really glad that Nigeria has accepted the help.”

More than 300 girls were kidnapped by the Muslim terrorist organization known as Boko Haram, of which 275+ are still captive, and 53 have escaped. This group has killed thousands in the past, all in the name of strict Islamic law.

They’ve announced their plans for these children are to sell them or have them get married to members of Boko Haram.

Now you may ask: What did these school girls do, to deserve being kidnapped?

Well, it’s quite simple really: They were pursuing a ‘Western education’.

We, as America, need to stop wasting time and efforts and money on stupid ventures:

How about we turn a few of those dollars around and go after Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Harem in Nigeria…a man ‘officially’ named as a terrorist by the US State Dep. in 2012, and has a bounty on his head of $7 million from the US and another 50 million Nigerian Naira.

And please, can someone just #BringBackOurGirls?

I made a purchase this past Sunday at a popular store (No, not Apple, for all previous readers), and my total came out to just over $10.

Unfortunately, when I looked at my credit card statement Sunday night, I noticed a $10 charge, and a $10 return.

Which was weird, because I didn’t return my item to them…

Now comes my moral dilemma…do I contact the company to tell them their mistake?

Or do I just say that “Hey, I bought it. I paid for it. They messed up, why should it be my problem?”

I mean, I basically just received my item for free…

Let me just be clear…this is a large publicly traded company…and when push comes to shove, my $10 will not make any dent in their bottom line (at least I hope not…because if so, they are in deep doo-doo).

Ultimately I don’t think I am required to contact them, as it was entirely their mistake…but what do my six readers think of this matter?

UPDATE:

On Wednesday of the same week I went to email them, and I checked my Credit Card statement one last time…and it had popped back up on there as a Charge, so all is good.
