Aviously

Because, aviously…

Isn’t it great? Gas prices are at a low we haven’t seen April 2009, averaging $2.04 (as of 1/22) nationwide.

While it is great for travel, and for driving to/from work, it can mess with your overall spending.

For example, if you normally designate $100 a month for gas in your budget, you may only be spending $80 now.

The question becomes, what do you do with the extra $20?

Do you spend it? Do you instead just adjust your budget, allocating $80 a month for it?

The best suggestion I can offer: Leave your budget at $100, and pocket the savings.

I don’t think prices will hit the $4 mark again anytime soon, but if they start to creep back up towards $3+, it won’t hurt your bottom line, as the money is still there and waiting.

P.S. If you don’t have a monthly budget…then it is something to think about!

Backstrom premieres tonight on FOX at 9PM, and features former The Office star Rainn Wilson, as well as Dennis Haysbert (The Unit).

Wilson plays Lieutenant Backstrom, a homicide detective in Portland, Oregon, who to put it quite simply is an unhealthy smoking alchoholic, who is unfriendable, hates everyone equally, but enjoys the little things in life.
Oh, and he’s an absolute genius.

I believe that Backstrom lives intensely in the moment. On a higher plane of existance from which he is able to hear the universe speak

Backstrom becomes his suspects and victims to try and see what happened thru their eyes, and figures them out (usually correctly).

Living in a house boat, with an old friend, who happens to be a criminal, gives Backstroms connections he needs to help solve his cases.

I don’t see the worst in everyone, I see the everyone in everyone” -Backstrom

Many will compare this to the “House of police”, and it may very well be, which to that I say: Bring on that 8 season goal!

To take from the show: I really believe, that this show absolutely will, be a fan favorite for all Rainn Wilson fans…and as such, this show may very well live (or die) on his popularity.

I’m you, watching this show, and enjoying it.

After watching the first 3 episodes, I can say that it is indeed an enjoyable show, and I look forward to the rest of Season 1!

Overall it’s an 8.5 out of 10.

College prepares you for a lot.

They attempt to teach you the tools of the trade that you will need to succeed in life.

They even occasionally provide you internships that give you “real-world experiences”.

But one thing they can’t prepare you for, is the 40+/hour work week, for 52 weeks a year, for 30+ years.

Having to go into work every single day, doesn’t sound like much of a challenge, but think of it like this. If you aren’t feeling good, you can call out sick…but if you wake up in the morning, exhausted, you can’t just “go late to class” or “skip class”, you still need to head in to work and do your job.

Want to go to Puerto Rico for a week? Can’t just wait for “Spring Break” or “Winter Vacation” to go, instead need to use your off/vacation days.
Sure, you can use them on the vacation, and use some more on (at least for Jewish people) holidays (there are a low number this year, of only 8 days…assuming you can leave early on the day before and not need to take those off as well).

It’s a tiring experience that you get used to after a while…or at least you pretend to.

I know a lot of people will counter with “I put a lot of effort into college”, and similar arguments, but ultimately, your bed time is still flexible, because your “in-time” for classes is different daily, as well as not having the same grueling hours, day-after-day, for more than 3 or 4 months at a time.

So Step 1 of getting ready for a work life: Get into normal sleep habits, and regular schedules, leading up to your work life.

I’ve had this topic in my drafts for the longest period of time, and decided to finally talk about it.

I had seen a Wells Fargo ad, which featured #HashtagLunchbag, and I had thought at the time “I should do something like that”…but of course I got lazy and didn’t do it.
To explain, their goal is: “#HashtagLunchbag is a movement dedicated to utilizing social media to bring awareness to and eliminate hunger in local communities.”

Yesterday I was reading a story about Rosa’s Fresh Pizza, in which they sell pizza for $1 a slice, and you can buy a slice for a homeless person or one in need (which can be done through here).

So with all this in mind, what store/organization can I partner with to start my own campaign? Or better yet, what can I do to make a similar push towards getting a wide support of charitable outgiving?

The best part of all the above suggestions is that they don’t cost much from each person donating (as little as $1), but they help promote a giving-culture, which I think can be just as important.

While the launch of the hashtag, and the inspiration for the blog name, has been #AvisTravels, there has been very few travels since then.

#AvisTravels originated when I took Amtrak from New York to Indiana, and posted about my trip using the hashtag.

For this blog it was more a matter of traveling my mind and thoughts, and less so about actual travel.

Well, I am happy to say I have a quick road trip coming up, in which case the blog may be off for a day or two, but my Twitter will be full of #AvisTravels…unless I decide to do a Live Blog of sorts, haven’t really decided yet.

I plans to drive up to Boston for a weekend, sometime in February/March, and then quite possibly, the return of an Amtrak trip to Indiana, or even a 700+ mile drive.

Time will tell 🙂 Stay tuned!

I have been a fan of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (Ryanverse) series since I was old enough to read these books.

I inherited some of the books from my siblings as hand me downs…until I started collecting the ones I’d missed, as well as the new ones, and now have the full 17-book series, with the following picture being two rows and multiple stacks deep.

Tom Clancy Books

Since Clancy’s passing, Mark Greaney has taken over all the Ryanverse novels (and now the spin-off Campus books as well), after working with him on some of the later novels.

While some books since Day 1 have been dry and very boring (I’m looking at you Hunt For Red October) others in the series have been incredible (with my personal favorite book (not just in this series, but in general) Rainbow Six).

And this latest book, Full Force and Effect easily makes it’s way up the list of 17, probably in the top 5 overall. With lots of the typical Tom Clancy style of over-detailing that these books have been known for, mixed with the right amount of action, and lots of both Jack Ryans, it brings the series back to what it is good at: American covert operations, lots of HUMINT (Human Intelligence), and lets not forget the modern day cyber and technological hacks.

This is a great read for any Clancy fan, and anyone who is looking for a good book will enjoy this one (granted they’d be missing a LOT of back story and hidden relationships).
Easily, this book is a 9.5 out of 10.

Glee once stood for what was wrong with society.

Highlighting issues such as bullying, homophobia, suicides and drug abuse.

And then one of their own left the world due to a drug problem, and instead of pulling themselves together and coming back even stronger, the show has quickly become what is wrong with people these days.

They had an easy out too, with the option to end at the end of last season, and no one would’ve held it against them, especially after the Cory Monteith situation.

Instead they decided to have one more season, of 13-episodes, to try and “wrap up” a storied series, which spawned hundreds of Billboard Top-Singles and launched many careers.

The only issue was, all their “High-school” students had graduated…so how do you make a show and fill it with nobodies, like you had done in Season 1, and hope to still get people to watch?

Answer: You don’t.

You bring back these now-adults, and give them “jobs” at the schools: teaching, mentoring and bullying.

(Granted, this is all a “TV world”, and everyone, I’m sure, is above age in real life, but let’s consider what this week’s episodes showed us…)

They brought adults into high school, to try and convince the kids that the now-defunct, rejuvenated Glee club, is going to be popular again…and what better way to convince them then:

  • Bullying – Yes, they actively call high schoolers “nerds” and put down “Tea party” students for their political views
  • Seduction – Adult, alumni, cheerleaders, putting on their old outfits, dancing with the current high school cheerleaders, and rubbing up on the guys there, to try and show that you can be hot, cool, and a singer

Is this really what the show is trying to teach nowadays?

Is that really the best that can be shown in the first 15% of the season?

Has the show lost its touch completely after the loss, or are they trying to work up one final crescendo, before the grand finale?

Some people have trouble keeping up with the news, or just simply don’t care.

But they feel left out of conversations and want to know what’s going on.

I signed up for “The Skimm” a few weeks ago, and it’s a nice daily email with the info you may have missed yesterday, and info to keep you posted on the latest stories.

One of my friends had an idea for a girl (or guy, but in this scenario we’ll go with girl) to go on 10 dates, with 10 different people, in 10 days.

This is an interesting idea, and has some pros and cons.

For starters, it would definitely make for a good way to get out there and explore the dating world.

It would also be a great way to figure out what one is looking for, especially if the 10 are a diverse crowd.

But is it fair?

  • The guy dating her on Day 1 has to realize that no matter what he does, she will be going out with 9 more guys, before she considers if she’d date him again.
Personally, I’d take that as a challenge, to make that first date so great, that the other 9 can’t live up to it, and she’d remember him.
  • But with the amount of effort I’ve seen girls put into first dates, would it be fair to the 9th or 10th guy? Would she be putting the same effort into it after going through the motions day after day?

Just something for people to think about…and while I am sure I won’t hear comments on this (especially not on here, even from the idea-person themselves), one can always hope!
