Aviously

Because, aviously…

Today is the day that Motorola starts to make a lot more sales…at least for the next four weeks (if not, hopefully, longer).

The reason is quite simple. Verizon, the largest carrier in America, has stopped offering free phones. And if it isn’t free, are people going to lay out big $$ ?

For starters the cheaper model, the new Moto G, sells for $180-$220 and features a water-resistant phone, 13MP camera, and is customizable using Moto Maker.

As for the more expensive model, the Moto X, which comes out with a new version next month, the pricing is cheap compared to its competitors:

  • Moto G (2015) – $180 – 13MP – 5.0″ screen/S2B 67.0% – YES SD Slot – 2470mAh Battery
  • Moto X (2014) – $300 – 13MP camera – 5.2″ screen/S2B 73.1% – No SD Slot – 2300mAh Battery
  • Moto X Pure (2015) – $400 – 21MP camera5.7″ screen/Unknown – YES SD Slot 3000mAh Battery
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge – $672 – 16MP camera – 5.1″ screen/S2B 71.7% – No SD Slot – 2600mAh Battery
  • Apple iPhone 6 – $650 – 8MP camera – 4.7″ screen/S2B 65.8% – No SD Slot – 1810mAh Battery
  • LG G4 – $552 – 16MP camera – 5.5″screen/S2B 72.5% – YES SD Slot – 3000mAh Battery

S2B = Screen to Body Ratio

Why people would buy the iPhone under these circumstances I will never understand…

Friday I went for a slice of pizza, and parked legally in front of the pizza store (located on Kings Highway between East 7th and 8th, for those locals interested). I was inside for less than a minute (enough time to walk in, ask for a slice, and leave with it) and came out to my light dangling, and the front left side of my car mushed…with no car in sight.

My first expression was disbelief, and thankfully some guy across the street called out to me “It was a truck, they just took off. I have video.” I went across to talk to him, and he sent me the few second video (that later I saw showed the truck leaving the scene), and I asked him for details.
He told me it had been a “Lucky Truck Rental” truck and that they had turned left at the corner.

With nothing to lose before I called the cops, I walked to the corner and looked down the block. Surprisingly, the truck was halfway down the block pulled over at a hydrant (what they had been trying to do when they hit me) while one person ran into a convenience store.

I approached the van (with my camera on and recording, of course), and saw a young(ish) kid behind the wheel, and I said:
Me: “You hit my car and left”
Driver: “What?
M: “You hit my car and left. That’s a hit and run. I’m calling the cops.”
D: “No, I’m sorry. Don’t call. I’ll pay cash.”
Meanwhile his coworker (henceforth known as C)  had come back from the store, and they started talking in their native tongue.

Since I already had on tape his basic confession (with “I’m sorry” instead of “I don’t know what you are talking about”) as well as videoing his license plate, the address of the rental company, and his registration, plus the scuff marks on the vehicle, I figured I have nothing to lose, and told them to meet me at the collision place I use, just two blocks away.

When we got to the collision place C asked me not to film it…and I told him that I most certainly was going to film it.
While waiting for an estimate, D & C got a call from their boss (B) and they put me on the phone with him…he had the nerve to ask me:
B: “Can you let C and the van go to do a delivery. D will stay with you”
M: “No. If the truck leaves, I call the cops.”

The mechanic comes out and tells them that it’ll be expensive, around $2,000 to fix my car up to how it was before the accident.
I turned to D & C and asked them again:
M: “You sure you don’t want me to call the cops? This is what insurance is for. They’ll cover it.”
C: “No. We’ll pay for it.”

And so became a two+ hour of waiting…first for the Boss to show up, and then the haggling…

They wanted to pay $400 cash, and come back later to pay the rest. I told them they needed to pay it all before they left…and then came the laughable part when the boss turns to me and says:
B: “We’ll pay half now, and come back next week to pay the rest. Trust me.”
M: “Trust you? I lost all trust when he HIT AND RAN.”

The problem became that the boss wouldn’t put down a dime for his workers, and the two workers were both young and had not much more than starter debit cards…so when they’d go to the bank they were limited to just $400 withdrawal for the day.

They managed to scrounge most of the money together, between D & C, some cash and some on a credit card.

At this point I got all three of their licenses as collateral that they wouldn’t cancel the credit card and try to renege on their debts, and found out the real reason why they didn’t want the cops called…the driver was a teenager driving on his permit.

I gave the car in yesterday and will hopefully have it back within a day or two to the same status that it was Friday morning.

And if they cancel out that Credit Card…I’m sure the cops would be more than interested to see the video I have of them paying cash and agreeing to pay for the damages.

With my birthday this past Saturday I’d like to thank the companies and corporations that do their little gestures to make my birthday extra special! Here are some of them from this year:

I also want to add a little end note, and thank whomever wished me a Happy Birthday before, during, or after my birthday.
When people ask me how I know random information (because I’m full of it), I always say “I don’t know, I just retain a lot of random stuff”…and whoever wishes me well, really remembers my birthday, and goes the extra mile, are never forgotten.

So thank you.

American Idol is approaching its 15th and final season. And while the early years had better outcomes, recent years haven’t been as strong. I decided to glance through the seasons and see who I liked and where they placed in their seasons.

Kelly Clarkson – Season 1 – Winner — Kelly took America by storm and made this show into an instant success, as they produced one of their strongest singers right off the bat, claiming the title of “The Original American Idol”.
First Original Song – “A Moment Like This”

Carrie Underwood – Season 4 – Winner — A record breaking country singer, who has already been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, Carrie is another of America’s sweethearts, and her trophy cabinet is full, including a Golden Globe nomination.
First Original Song – “Inside Your Heaven”

Chris Daughtry – Season 5 – 4th Place — Daughtry may not have made it to the finals, but he certainly shown through, and went on to lead a band under his name. His groups first album was the fastest selling debut rock album.
First Original Song – “It’s Not Over”

Katharine McPhee – Season 5 – 2nd Place (Winner: Taylor Hicks) — McPhee has certainly made a name for herself since the AI days, becoming an actress in the TV show Scorpion, and the lead actress/singer in Smash.
First Original Song – “Over It”

Adam Lambert – Season 8 – 2nd Place (Winner: Kris Allen) — It took a while for him to grow on me, but his recent song of ‘Ghost Town’ has worked in winning me over. His brief time on Glee didn’t do anything for me though.
First Original Song – “No Boundaries”

Nick Fradiani – Season 14 – Winner — The most recent show winner, got his name out there as the Theme Song for the USWNT in their 2015 FIFA World Cup Championship run. We will see if he continues to rise.
First Original Song – “Beautiful Life”

Season 15 is certain to try its hardest in making a comeback, as recent seasons have generally flopped in the ratings (certainly compared to the earlier years). For the show to succeed they need a big bang in the last year, and lots of cameos from former “celebrity contestants” (I’m looking for you William Hung), as well as a solid winner that can launch a great career.

It’s been a month since my last Song Of The Day post, so here are three more songs that I’m listening to these days.

Cool For The Summer – Demi Lovato

Don’t be scared ’cause I’m your body type

Peace – O.A.R.

I just wanna make you laugh
I just wanna see that smile

Beautiful Life – Nick Fradiani

We got good friends
They’re so good to us
And haters can hate
And fakers can front

The Yankees and the Mets rule New York baseball. But as the season progresses one of these teams tends to fade while the other waits a little longer to flop.

Yankees Mets Logos

But a weird thing has happened this year…it’s August 5th and both of them are in first place of their divisions.
2006 was the last time that both of these teams were in first place in August.
That’s a lot of years ago for franchises that spend boatloads of money.

Yet they are taking different approaches to this year and the race for a World Series Championship.

The Yankees have lots of hitters, but needed starting pitching (due in part to a bunch of injuries). But the trade deadline came and went and no move was made…instead they are calling up a rookie to fill their pitching needs.
Luis Severino starts tonight, after pitching in AAA this year and having a 1.91ERA and 7-0 record in recent starts.

On the flip side are the Mets, who are stacked with young starting pitchers (22, 26, 27, 28) and the old resurgent Bartolo Colon (42), but lacking any hitting. For example there was a day in July when the batting average of their starting lineup was in the low .200s while their cleanup hitter was batting in the 170s.
So out they went at the deadline and landed a big bat in Yoenis Cespedes, who will likely just be a short-term rental.
Due to MLB rules, if they don’t resign him to a long term deal before August 31, they wouldn’t be eligible to sign him this off-season, and while many fans (as well as Yoenis himself) would love to see him stay with the Mets, it is highly unlikely that the team will have money for him, as they finish off paying retribution for the Bernie Madoff  scam through 2017.

Will we see a repeat of the 2000 World Series?

Bernie back, a way back, Bernie there, heeeee makes the catch. Ball game over. World Series over. The Yankees Win. Thhhheeeeeee Yankees Win!

Of course I was one of the 14 million people that upgraded in the first 24 hours of release. Was that even a question on anyones mind?

Windows 10

Should you upgrade? Well, that’s up to you…Personally I had used the Beta Previews, and any bugs I ran into at the time (for example: iPad connectivity) are now gone and work fine.
But it is subject to bugginess now at launch, and that may scare a lot of casual users away from the product.

Personally I think the pros outweigh the cons at the moment, and that everyone who has the opportunity should jump on the Windows 10 bandwagon.

If you want a good comparison of Windows 7/8 vs. Windows 10, and all the reasons for/against updating, check out this great article from Forbes.

I am not going to name the store, because while they did do horrible things, they don’t deserve a public naming (in private I’d call them out in a heartbeat).

Here are a few stories that happened, all in the same pizza shop, over the last few days:

  • The manager (henceforth labeled “George”) talking to a worker about he isn’t going to pay her for two days of the week, because of XX, YY, and ZZ. This is while he’s standing at the cash register.
I think there are probably better places to have that conversation.
  • Huge line waiting to pay, but George keeps taking phone calls. He’s the only cashier.
  • George smokes in the store.
  • George likes listening to cantoral music on his phone. Out loud. And sings along with it.
  • One of his workers (let’s call him “Javier”) is clearly incompetent. But he’s in charge of the pizza oven.
For example: Someone ordered three slices of pizza, to go. He was handed three separate paper bags…leaving the customer to stack them when he left in order to hold them all. When Javier was asked why he didn’t just use a box, he said: “Oh. I didn’t think of it.”
  • On two different occasions George was arguing with customers over the prices of items. Using lines like: “Here, let me print you a receipt, and show you”…but then still giving them the price they had said it should be.
Mind you, this store does NOT have prices posted.
I went there a few times, and was charged two different prices for the same slice of pizza…maybe there was a lunch special in effect one of those times? I’ll never be sure, because…NO SIGNS.
  • Javier was asked: “Is the pizza cheesy?”…to which he replied: “No, we only have what you see here.”…this was repeated multiple times before the person gave up and went to order a falafel instead.

There are more stories, but I’m gonna stop at that…mind you I was only at this store 3 times.

All Taxi & Limousine (TLC) cars in NYC have a little orange light on the front and back of the car, to alert the police if the driver is in trouble.

Original Image from LuxuryLoft.com

The driver can activate it using his leg, so that if he was being held hostage while driving, he can press it without the attacker noticing.
The problem with this location is that they often hit it by mistake, and don’t even know about it.

I’ve seen the light on multiple times, and have pulled up next to the car, looked inside to make sure nothing was wrong (the cars were always just the driver, no passengers), and told him about it, so he could turn it off.

But the bigger issue is that not enough people know about it, and what it does.
And those that do know about it clearly just don’t care about it.

I’m talking about other TLC cars just drive by the car without checking that they are alright…and if they want to fight as a single union against Uber, then show support for your fellow workers and make sure they are okay.

As for the NYPD, I’ve seen these TLC cars with their lights on drive past an NYPD cruiser, and the cop doesn’t pull him over, as they are supposed to do, but just ignores it.

#TheMoreYouKnow

It can’t hurt to be prepared.

In the Winter we tend to (hopefully) be more cautious, with keeping gas in the car, and everything powered appropriately.

But at times we tend to get lax with some things, but honestly we need to keep things up to date and ready for use at all times.

Here are a few good examples of things that should be kept on top of, all year long:

  • Gas In The Car — As I said earlier, it is always important to keep the car filled, I’d say even more than 40% at all times, because you never know when you’ll need to drive around all day and not have a chance to stop for gas.
  • Chargers & Battery Packs — Charging your phone every night, whether it needs it or not, should be a no brainer by now, as it can’t hurt modern phones (with appropriate chargers) to make sure it is at 100%.
Now, while it isn’t practical to carry lots of chargers and wires with you, in case your phone runs out, it isn’t difficult to carry a battery pack (or micro charger) with you, that can give your phone a little extra juice when needed.
One that I recommend, which is roughly the size of a phone, and just as thin/light, yet can hold up to 2.5 charges (depending on your phone) is the Motorola P4000 Power Pack.
  • Time In Your Phone — Most people have unlimited talk/text these days, but there is still a large amount of users on Tracfone/Net 10/Etc. who pay as they go. But keeping a nice supply of time in there, isn’t usually a priority. They tend to only use a small amount of minutes a month, so don’t think about having a supply.
But it can’t hurt to have a backup plan, on how to quickly get minutes, without too much of a hassle, so that you don’t get stranded without a phone in an emergency.
