Aviously

Because, aviously…

Electronic Arts’ (EA) latest game came out on Tuesday afternoon, and it’s a delightful kid-friendly game called Minions Paradise.

Minions Paradise

It’s a time-based game, similar to Family Guy: The Quest For Stuff and The Simpsons: Tapped Out, and needs a little TLC at the beginning, before you can settle in to longer tasks.

It centers around Phil, who is introduced in the opening video, as a clumsy minion who crashes a cruise trip and has to make the island he ends up on as fun as can be for his fellow minions. And he tries to do this at his self-built bar: Phil’s, as other minions come to him with tasks…complete enough tasks and you get yourself a little party, disco ball and all!

The game is available on both Android and iOS, and can sync via Facebook.

After only a few days of fun gameplay, I’d give this game a 9 out of 10.

I think I am becoming immune to watching death and killings.

Not immune to personal instances of it, and still emotionally affected by those, but I no longer feel anything when I see the life leave a body.

It all changed for me with the Charlie Hebdo killings. When I watched the video and saw the killer stand over a policeman and just execute him on the sidewalk, I saw the life leave the body…and the emotion left me.

I feel a hate towards the party that deserves it (sometimes the shooter, sometimes the one being shot) but I no longer cringe at watching it.

It has become part of my daily social media experience. Watching terrorists in Israel stabbing people and the police shooting them, and the life leaving their bodies, I feel nothing.

I have become emotionally detached from watching the life and soul leave a body. This doesn’t mean I enjoy gore…as a matter of fact, I don’t like horror movies because I see them as pointless. I get no enjoyment out of it, and fail to see why I would spend my time watching it.

But when I see the life leave, whether I like the person or hate them, think they deserve it or should really live, I just don’t feel it anymore.

There are two definites with the play that occurred Saturday night. Chase Utley was definitely not out at second, and he also made a very dangerous play.

The slide into second had the intent to break up the double play, except Utley was nowhere near second base at the time, making the play very dangerous.

On the flip side he was safe at second because: He wasn’t out.
If a player steps to the plate, and the pitcher refuses to throw, the umpire will rule an automatic ball. If the pitcher chooses not to throw for two hours, then a few runs will score after multitudes of walks.
In order to be “Out” you need to be out.
And Chase Utley was not tagged out, as well as Reuben Tejada not being anywhere near second base, so the “neighborhood rule” wasn’t in play.

One can argue that Chase left the field, so he should be out. But he only left after the umpire told him to, calling him out (initially). Similar to any other reviewed play overturned.

One can say that Utley should be called Out on “Interference”, which obviously wasn’t called.

Utley was safe. The play was dangerous. And a minimum of a one-game suspension will happen…the only question is will the suspension happen in the playoffs (when it matters) or for the opening games of next year (when nobody will care)…if he doesn’t retire of course.

NYC had an initiative recently to plant trees everywhere…and that they did. Any open concrete space has been planted in.

The last time they did a mass-planting they by mistakenly planted the female version of the ginkgo biloba tree, instead of the males, leaving rotten vomit-smelling berries lining the streets and your shoes.
Of course some people do go around and try to collect the berries for cooking/eating, but most of them just sit around smelling things up.

One of my issues with the whole campaign is that the city comes around, cuts open the sidewalk, plops a tree in with a couple of poles supporting it, and never comes back to it.

Most of the new trees on my block currently have their poles no longer attached to the trees, as they’ve expanded out of the straps or simply fallen off over time, and the poles themselves have fallen over onto sidewalks or streets.

Meanwhile, the tree next to my house has been standing there for many decades, and is clearly in a failing state, as we can tell by the GIANT BRANCHES THAT SNAP OFF WHENEVER THEIR IS A WIND! But leave it to them to show up and say “nope, this tree is healthy”.
Mind you they said the same thing about the giant tree across the street from me…until Hurricane Irene gave it a little push and it fell over.

About 15 years ago they planted a new tree in front of my house, poles and all, and never came back to it. It grew slanted, due to being planted crooked, and fell over two summers later.
So they came, and stood it back up, with the trusty help of those poles, and it continued to stand, crooked, until they removed it due to its “failing state”.

It’s great that they want NYC to be green and healthy, but if you aren’t doing upkeep on it, it’s more of a nuisance than a help.

Come on PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Agriculture), get on this!

My Dad placed his first Jet.com order last week, and eagerly awaited the special purple box. I’ve talked previously about Jet, and my little Jet Li action figure.

Jet Box

He ordered two items, that generally come with a bonus pack (Ex. Buy the 300 pack, and get 24 free!), yet when they showed up, it was just the generic packaging, with only 300.

After reaching out to Jet, they took no time in fixing their mistake, and sending out a package with 200 more of the item, at no charge to us at all.

Thanks Jet for stepping up and doing more than what was expected in correcting the mistake!

Motorola announced recently that when their phones upgrade to Android Marshmallow they will be getting rid of some of their unique features, as it now overlaps Google products.

This includes Assist, Migrate, and Connect.

Assist is being replaced by “Do Not Disturb”, Migrate is being replaced with enhanced support for backups, and Connect is going away because…people are going to other messengers?

Motorola Connect gave users the option to access their phone calls and texts online using extensions in Chrome.
The reason they are getting rid of it is because Motorola says more and more people are leaving the stock messaging apps, and going to Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger.

But are people really going to all digital messaging systems, fully data driven, instead of text based messaging, which is available via a phone number and even the weakest signal?

Are you ready to give up having a phone number in exchange for everything being done online?

Here are some songs that I’m listening to these days:

Hold My Hand – Jess Glynne

Soul is like a melting pot when you’re not next to me
Tell me that you’ve got me and you’re never gonna leave

One of the more intense songs/videos you’ll see:

On My Mind – Ellie Goulding

It’s a shame, you said I was good…You don’t mess with love you mess with the truth…But my heart don’t understand, why I got you on my mind.

Ellie’s new album, Delirium, comes out on November 6.

Smoke Break – Carrie Underwood

But sometimes I wanna pop that tap
Take a swing and make the world stop
And watch it fade away
He said I don’t smoke
But sometimes I wanna light it up
And when things get tough
Sometimes I need a smoke break

Carrie’s new album, Storyteller, comes out on October 23.

I’ve been meaning to write about Nashville…but in the meantime, here are one of my favorites from it.

Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet – Nashville

This time it’s goodbye trouble
I feel the light at the end of this tunnel
I get stronger with every step
Come Hell, come high water
You push on me I’m going to push back harder
I got a whole lot more than a little bit left
Oh, so don’t put dirt on my grave just yet

Tony Stewart announced yesterday that next year would be his final year of racing in the Sprint Cup Series.
Not to say he won’t race anymore, just that he won’t compete full time, similar to what Jeff Gordons’ future looks like, and what Dale Earnhardt Jr. will likely aim for in a couple of years.

<Tony Stewart quotes inserted throughout, taken from USA TODAY>

This added year is not just a ride-it-out year. This is (when) we’re going to gouge our eyes out and do everything we can to win races and win another championship.

I’ve been a fan of Tony’s since the early 2000s, but people fall on one of two sides with him: Love Him or Hate Him. There is very little middle ground with Tony, because of his driving style and ferocity on the track.

I know the potential is still there. I know we can do it. I was the first guy to run 200 miles an hour at Texas Motor Speedway, and if that doesn’t prove that we can still nut it up, I don’t know what does.

Tony Stewart 2005 Champion

Tony Stewart 2005 Champion

Here’s a quick look at some of his achievements:

  • Indy Car Winner (1997 Indy Racing League)
  • Midget Winner
  • Sprint Winner
  • USAC Triple Crown Winner (1995) (One of two drivers in history)
  • Only driver to win both IndyCar and NASCAR Championships
  • 3-time NASCAR champion (2002, 2005, 2011)
  • Won the NASCAR Championship in 2011 as an owner-driver
  • 1999 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year (NASCAR)
  • 1996 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year

It was a choice that was 100 percent mine. There wasn’t any pressure from anybody. … There have been more challenges in the last couple of years that have distracted from my fun racing a little bit, but it’s still fun. If it wasn’t fun, I would just walk away from it.

He has had an outstanding career (which has certainly had it’s ups and downs (Kevin Ward Jr.)), and was inducted to the Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2001, and certain to be inducted in the NASCAR Hall of Fame when the time comes.

‘Smoke’ will surely be missed from the racetrack…but he won’t be far away as he moves to the owners box next to Gene Haas in Stewart-Haas Racing.

In about a month #AvisTravels plans on going on the road for a few days at the end of October.

The destination: Niagara Falls.

I’m hoping to go on a quick drive up there, with stops on the way there and back (to unknown locations as of now).

Any ideas on where to stop between NYC and Niagara Falls, CA will be welcomed, as will any ideas on what to do when I’m there (although I have a few things in mind to do there) <rumor has it there is a boat ride or something>.

I watched The Muppets new TV show on ABC this week with high expectations.

After all, they were taking a huge franchise, that already has a fan base and an enjoyability factor, and turning it into what should be an easy TV show. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, honestly, everything.

Everything was wrong with it.

The humor wasn’t there. The storyline was drab. And it all just felt so very wrong.

We all enjoy a good dirty innuendo in our shows, but they need to be witty and clever to work…instead it was just trying way to hard. Did we really need a joke about people going to Fozzie Bear’s dating profile, because they were looking for a bear?

Overall that first week was an Animal of a flop. A Piggy of a show. It is just a ton of Electric Mayhem. Statler And Waldorf would jump off that balcony if they had to watch this crap. And if it doesn’t pick up, it’ll be Gonzo.

See, how hard are Muppet jokes?!

I’ll give it another try on Episode 2…but so far it’s a poor poor 2.5 out of 10.
