Aviously

Because, aviously…

I was looking back through my posts and was surprised to see that I never talked about one of the best things I’ve done recently.
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood in Richmond, Virginia.

This was the first time Garth went on tour in 13-years, and despite rising costs and the ability to raise ticket prices from when he last went on the road, the concept for his shows remained the same.
One price, no matter where you sit in the venue, which led to me having front row of a section off the floor, the same price as people sitting in the top tier behind the stage.
But because of this, the tour has set many records, including most shows, general attendance, and despite one price has become one of the highest grossing tours of all time.

The crowd at the Richmond Coliseum was fantastic, from young to old, men and women, all singing along, and the performers fully interacted with the crowd.
This included a little kid dressed like Garth with a fake cardboard guitar, trading his with Garth for the real deal.

The concert itself was outstanding. Despite having a recent album, he played mostly his older material, telling people he knows why they came, and what they really want to hear.
On that note, he actually performed the full version of Friends In Low Places for the last night in town, and he let the crowd take it away on some songs.

Trisha Yearwood comes out for a duet of In Another’s Eyes before taking over and giving great audience participation for She’s In Love With The Boy.

During the encore, he ventures into songs by other groups, including Billy Joel’s Shameless, and performing Callin Baton Rouge.

If I went to another Garth Brooks concert…I’d want to do it in Richmond all over again.

That’s how long this site has been open. Three years and three months. And besides holidays, vacations and emergencies I’ve posted every weekday.

The page has undergone a few aesthetic changes, with the current one meant to make the pictures and videos posted stand out, and the colors to be easy on the eyes.

But the parts I’m most proud of are the important numbers to the page…

I do have some plans for the future of it all, including possibly pushing it all more on Social Media…we shall see.

Over the last few months, for the price of a subway ride ($2.75), New York City has launched the NYC Ferry service.

This ferry is a huge help to the Rockaways, which previously had been a long trip to the city (over 70 minutes by train) is now just under an hour by ferry.
The service also launches from Astoria and Long Island City in Queens and stops throughout Brooklyn including Williamsburg, DUMBO, and Bay Ridge.
On the Manhattan side, there are stops at Wall Street and the East 34th Street Terminal.

The ferry is supposed to expand to the Lower East Side as well as Soundview in The Bronx by this time next year.

They are also encouraging biking to/from the ferry, charging only an extra $1 to bring your bike on board.

While people are getting stuck in subway tunnels and sweating away in broken air conditioning, these boats, operated by Hornblower (who are known for their work at Niagara Falls), are aiming to be top of the line.
Here are some differences from the MTA system, as well as some nice amenities, of which they can learn from to update the subways:

  • Mobile App: This app is loaded with all sorts of goodies, including the ferry schedule, boarding passes, and daily news articles and music
  • Separate parking on board for bikes and strollers
  • Temperature controlled interior
  • New Stand: Snacks, drinks, chargers, and all sorts of other travel gear for sale on board
  • Lots of seats, both indoors and out
  • Charging Stations, and upcoming free WiFi

Last summer I took the time to start binge-watching shows from Showtime, including HomelandRay Donovan, and Shameless. This summer I have turned to USA Networks and started Suits.

Suits is about a kid (Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams) with a photographic memory who fakes his way into being a lawyer, working with the famous Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), who knows his little secret, to close cases.

Let’s not forget about two of the power women of the show, Meghan Markle and Sarah Rafferty. Playing legal assistants and paralegals, they are two of the baddest women in television, stopping at nothing to get the job done, and being there for the men they work for.

Over the seasons more people find out that he is faking it, and just like how they win their cases, they make deals, blackmail, and just flat out trick people, in an attempt to win every case, and keep their whole world from falling apart.

The show has just started Season 7, and as I attempt to catch up, I’ll note that Seasons are typically 16 episodes (shorter in the first season), and fly by quickly when binging, always a sign of a great show.
I highly recommend it for anyone looking for something to watch, and it’s currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

James Patterson has launched a new line of books, called “BookShots”.

The idea behind a BookShot is for them to be less than 150 pages, all story and no fluff, and costing less than $5.

Some of the books are part of his regular series’ (such as Cross or Private), but he’s also launched a “BookShots Flames” line of books, which are all Romance.

I read my first ‘Shot this weekend and was left a little disappointed. While I finished it in only a short time (as advertised), it was also just the story and no fluff (also as promised)…but it was missing the potatoes.

Every book has meat and potatoes (or in the case of Clancy, meat/potatoes/soup/salad/dessert), and these books are just the meat. But without the potatoes, it’s just not filling. It leaves you wanting more.

I guess it can work for those who aren’t big readers, and these will probably be fantastic as travel books since they fit easily in a small pocket and are done in the same time as your trip, but otherwise, I am staying away from them, and sticking to my big boy books.

Elon Musk tweeted last week that he has gotten preliminary approval for a Hyperloop tunnel on the East Coast, running from NY to DC, via Philadelphia and Baltimore.

29 minutes for a trip along the full route would mean the tourism in all cities would increase. Foreign tourists staying in one city, as well as weekend getaways, would be an easy hop.

Hyperloop has never been tested in actual use, and previous plans for it have never gotten beyond the planning stages, but that won’t slow down Musk and his high ambitions, as he plans to get the tunnel dig started within a year.
These plans will be alongside the Hyperloop build in the Los Angeles area, and Musk has even expressed long term interest in San Francisco and Texas projects.

While this is still just faint ideas, I am all in favor of the quickly advancing technological world we live in, and Musk has long been ahead of the game.

I’ve been having an issue with my Google Photos. Here is my POST on the Google Product Forums, and if anyone here has any ideas, they’d be appreciated!

When uploading videos (from the Mobile app or from a desktop) to Google Photos it uploads at 360P and doesn’t allow for them to be downloaded.
The videos definitely are 1080P and not corrupt (the files view fine on PC or Mobile and upload fine to other locations (OneDrive, etc.)).
I have tried downloading via other methods and the videos won’t download then either:
  • Batch/zip download from Google Photos it comes up “This site can’t be reached”.
  • Via Takeout it’ll download all photos and no videos (as if they don’t even exist).
  • On mobile Photos App, you get the message “Trouble downloading video try again in a few minutes.”
Even though this is happening on all methods that I try uploading here are some other facts that may be asked:
  • I am running Android on my phone
  • My phone is up to date (both Operating System and the Photos App)
  • I have tried videos recorded on different devices
  • I have reinstalled the app on my phone
  • Videos were uploaded 24+ hours ago
  • This is happening to all videos I upload, regardless of size/length

I was walking through Brooklyn yesterday when I noticed members of the NYPD 70th Precinct hanging around a little Fiat. It didn’t look like an accident, or that someone was waiting for someone to pop the door (locked in keys), so I went over and started talking to them.

Turns out some taxi drivers had seen a cat run under a car and never came back out. The cat had crawled into the engine block and was now stuck inside.

Tuna had been placed under the car, but that wasn’t helping to lure him out, and he could not be seen, but could be heard mewing.

Finally the ESU (Emergency Services Unit) showed up and came to the rescue. After going door to door and finding where the cars owner was working, they popped the hood and tried to reach the cat.

Unfortunately, while stuck within the engine block, the kitten had full range to roam the hood, making it impossible to track down.

So out came the car jack and tools, removing the front tire and starting to access the bottom of the engine block they started chasing the little rascal around. With some officers on one side of the car, nudging him towards the opening, and an officer under the car, trying his hardest to reach the cat, the 90-minute cat race came to an end, and the tiniest of kittens was rescued from the confines of the engine.

Thirsty and tired, she was handed off to a bystander who volunteered to take her home.

I don’t get them…I don’t really understand action figures and the likes as adult collectibles.

Sure I collect things, like signed baseballs and soccer balls, or souvenirs from places I’ve visited.

I’ve even done sports cards (baseball, hockey, etc.) over the years, but I grab those more for the enjoyment of having a specific player, then in looking to make money. They also take up next to no space.

But over the past few years Pop Figures have taken off, and it’s hard to go into a store that sells them and not see tens (if not hundreds) of varieties. Barnes and Nobles and Game Stop both have shelves and showcases dedicated to them, and peoples goals are to collect full sets.

So Wednesday night I saw on Twitter that there was a new set of Star Wars figures coming out for Comic Con and they were being sold from four different sellers…all of which would sell out shortly after they go on sale.

So I played the odds, spent hours refreshing Walmart’s website, and actually managed to land all four of them.

So…now what? What do I do with them now? My guess…they’ll sit in my room and gather dust for a while…

Let’s discuss sports.

You may not watch sports all the time, or if you do you tend to stick to only a couple of sports.

Personally, I watch a wide variety, from Baseball and Hockey, to Soccer, NASCAR, and the Olympics.

But sometimes a sport or event comes along that everyone should be watching. It may be a yearly thing such as the Super Bowl or the Indy 500, or it could be a seismic sports event, like Mayweather vs McGregor.

But this past Sunday was absolutely historic for tennis. Wimbledon, the classiest of the Opens (and maybe of any sports event), dished out a showdown between two of the top players in the world, Roger Federer and Marin Cilic.
And Federer absolutely dominated en route to his record setting eighth Wimbledon and 19th Championship.
With every serve from Cilic, Roger was already moved into place, reading him like an open book.
Meanwhile, his slices were dipping and his shots were all landing.
So, of course, he finished things off with an Ace.

We say this all the time, but it really is a great time to watch sports. So many players, written off as “past their prime” continuing to succeed at the highest levels, with 2017 presenting us both Federer and Tom Brady.

Love them or hate them, they are fun to watch tear their games apart, and make it look oh so simple.
